Shaded seats at Rate Field: what to expect

Which side is shaded at a day game?

Rate Field, formerly Guaranteed Rate Field and U.S. Cellular Field, is open to the sky, so shade at a day game comes from whatever deck sits over your row. At a 1:10 start the sun is high and square off the first-base side, and the seats along the third-base line face straight into it. It stays well up all afternoon, high enough that no side of the ballpark is out of the sun for most of the game, so the row you sit in matters more than the side you pick. Chicago runs cold in April, when a sunny seat can be the warm one.

Where does the sun set at a night game?

At a June 7:10 first pitch the sun is low behind home plate, leaning toward first base, and the seats out in left-center field look right into it. At an April 6:40 start the low sun sits behind the first-base stands instead, and the left-field seats face it. At both, the seats behind home plate are already in shade at first pitch, and the sun is down well before the last out.
