The park in 90 seconds

The fan-shaped roof is the identity. The panels fan out from one pivot and clear the field in about 10 minutes. The Brewers decide on game day whether it is open or closed, based on the weather. On a cold night with the roof closed, they heat the seating bowl, but it has no air conditioning, so a hot day feels hot. The tailgate is the scene, because most fans drive here. Surface lots wrap the building on every side, and what happens in them, grills and RVs and all, is a working part of the day here. The day starts at your parking space. Getting here without a car takes more planning. No rail line reaches the park, the downtown streetcar does not come here, and the old dedicated game-day bus is gone. Driving is the default, with bar shuttles and rideshare as the no-drive backups that actually work.

Bernie, the sausages, and the Uecker Seats. Three fixtures carry the in-park character. Bernie Brewer slides down from Bernie’s Dugout, above the left-field bleachers, after Brewers home runs and wins. The Johnsonville Famous Racing Sausages, 5 costumes and one lap, run in the middle of the 6th, and the crowd stays put for it. And the Uecker Seats, named for Bob Uecker and his old beer commercial, sell for $5 on game day because the roof structure blocks part of the view. A statue of Uecker sits behind the last row of those seats.

If it’s your first visit, do these three things

Decide up front whether to tailgate or ride in. If you drive, buy your parking ahead of time and treat the lot as the start of the night. If you don’t, take a rideshare to the park’s rideshare lot or ride a bar’s game-day shuttle. Either is usually easier than the bus.

Leave the backpack and the cash at home. Backpacks are not allowed at any size, and the park is cashless. If you only have cash, kiosks by Guest Relations turn it into a prepaid card.

Walk past the statues at the Home Plate Gate. Statues of Aaron, Yount, Selig, and Uecker are outside it, along with the 1901 Brewers monument, so go see them even if you parked by another gate.

What’s the best time to visit American Family Field? Go in summer, for a reason particular to this park. Warm weather is what tends to get the roof opened, so July and August are your best odds of watching baseball outdoors here. Early spring is cold and lake-influenced, and those games still get played, so bring a layer and buy the date you want. Full month-by-month.

Where are the value seats at American Family Field? Start at the top. The Terrace Level (400s) is the tier that tends to ask least for a seat, and from the Terrace infield you get the whole field centered in front of you, provided you stay out of the rows behind home plate where the roof structure gets in the way. One step down, the Loge outfield and bleachers and the Field bleachers put you closer without charging the infield rate. How do I get to American Family Field? You drive, in almost every case. The lots off I-94 open hours before first pitch, and they are a reason to arrive early as well as a place to leave the car; prepay on the Brewers’ parking page. There is no train and no streetcar to the gates. For public transit, MCTS, the county transit system, runs the CONNECT 1 bus west on Wisconsin Avenue to a stop at 45th Street, which the Brewers put within a 15-minute walk of the park. If you would rather not drive at all, the park has its own rideshare lot, and a good number of Milwaukee bars run game-day shuttles for their customers; either is usually easier than the bus.
