Dodger Stadium in 90 seconds

It is the third-oldest park in the majors and the largest, built into a hillside. Dodger Stadium opened in 1962, behind only Fenway and Wrigley in age, and its listed capacity of 56,000 is the biggest in the majors. The mid-century design is terraced into the Chavez Ravine hillside, with a wave-shaped roofline over the upper deck, wavy sun-shade roofs over the outfield Pavilions, hexagonal scoreboards, and pastel seat tiers. The stacked-tier layout is why a park this large still feels close to the field from the lower levels.

The upper levels have the views. From the Reserve Level and the Top Deck you get the San Gabriel Mountains beyond the outfield and, from spots, the downtown LA skyline. Dodger Stadium is also mostly a night park, so most visits are comfortable evenings, with the day-game sun as the caveat.

The history is the deepest in the National League. The Dodgers were Brooklyn’s team, the team of Jackie Robinson, before owner Walter O’Malley moved them west for 1958. The land here was the predominantly Mexican-American neighborhoods of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop, whose families were displaced through the 1950s, a real and painful chapter the park’s story carries. Then come Koufax and Drysdale, Fernandomania in 1981, Kirk Gibson’s walk-off in the 1988 World Series, 67 seasons of Vin Scully with the franchise, the titles in 2020, 2024, and 2025, the Shohei Ohtani era, and one of the oldest rivalries in the majors, against the Giants.

If it’s your first visit, do these four things

Get there early, and eat before you drive up. Dodger Stadium is car-centric and the lots fill, so leave margin. Tailgating is prohibited on stadium property, the parking lots included, so the pre-game meal happens downhill or inside. Use the extra time on the statues in the Centerfield Plaza, the retired numbers, and the view.

General parking is directed. With a general pass, staff may send you to any of several lots, depending on arrival time, traffic flow, and lot events. If you want to park in a specific area, the Dodgers sell Preferred Parking, though not every Preferred lot is sold to the public.

Know the clear-bag rule. Bring a clear bag no bigger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches, or a small non-clear wristlet or clutch up to 5 by 8 by 2 inches, or no bag at all. Backpacks, large purses, and coolers hard or soft are out. If you arrive with a bag that is not allowed, the Dodgers have paid lockers in Lot H and Lot N for $15 a bag.

LA’s climate is mild and dry, and Dodger Stadium is mostly a night-game park, so a summer evening here needs no weather planning. May and June mornings are often gray under the marine layer locals call May Gray and June Gloom, which usually burns off by early afternoon. July and August bring hot afternoons but mild evenings.
