Getting to Tropicana Field

Tropicana Field sits in St. Petersburg, a different city from Tampa. The two cities face each other across the bay, roughly a half hour apart by car, and no train runs between them, so the whole trip plans around downtown St. Pete. From there the game is easy to reach. Rideshare has a drop-off spot for Gate 1 and another for Gates 4 and 5, the SunRunner rapid bus stops on the park’s north side, and the Rays run their own prepaid lots, where tailgating is allowed. Pick the option that matches where you’re staying and where you’re coming from.

Gate 4 and the numbered gates

The entrances are numbered, and the building is small enough that no gate leaves you far from your seat, so there’s no reason to circle the dome for a specific door.

The SunRunner puts you on the park’s north side. Gate 4 is the VIP entrance, where the premium crowd files in past the Longoria and Iwamura statues, so if you’re holding a regular ticket, read the signs before you commit to a line there.

Gates open 90 minutes before first pitch Monday through Friday, and 2 hours before on Opening Day, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Rideshare

The Rays’ A-Z guide lists two rideshare spots, and both handle pickup as well as drop-off. For Gate 1, set your drop-off at the Rays’ rideshare location in Lot 8. For Gates 4 and 5, your driver can drop you off on Trop Drive on 16th Street, and that is also the spot for an ADA drop-off.

Driving and parking

Driving is a real plan here rather than a fallback. St. Pete grew up around the car, the dome is ringed by its own lots, and tailgating is allowed in the Rays lots once they open. Charcoal, open flames, and oversized tents are not allowed, and nothing alcoholic carries through the gates. You can find more about the pre-game scene in our Around the Park section.

Lots 2, 3, 5, and 6 sell prepaid passes up to six hours before first pitch. Lot 1 is the premium lot. Lots 6 and 7 take general drive-up. Everything is cashless, and prepaid runs cheaper than pulling up and paying on game day. Lots open 2.5 hours before first pitch on weekdays and 3 hours before on weekends. EV chargers are in Lots 1, 5, and 7.

Parking passes are mobile-only, sold through the MLB Ballpark app the same as tickets. Buy the pass and load it in the app before you leave the hotel instead of sorting it out while you idle at the lot entrance.

If the Rays lots sell out, downtown garages pick up the slack. The two the team points to are the SouthCore Garage at 101 1st Ave S and the Central Garage at 1388 1st Ave N. The Rays’ own parking page points drivers to SpotHero to reserve a downtown garage space in advance, and on a weekend or a marquee date that’s worth doing, because it locks in the spot before you cross the bay and saves you circling for one after.

Coming over from Tampa for the night, I-275 carries you across the bay, 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Tampa without traffic. Give yourself a cushion at rush hour.

The SunRunner and the Looper Trolley

St. Pete has no rail, so the transit answer is the SunRunner, the bus rapid transit (BRT) line run by PSTA, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority. Its stop sits on the park’s north side, and the line connects downtown St. Pete, the Grand Central District, and St. Pete Beach, so a fan staying downtown or out at the beach can ride straight to the dome. Buses run every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and every 30 minutes from 8 p.m. to midnight, which covers a night game’s exit without a squeeze. Check the current fare and payment options on PSTA’s site or app before you ride.

The Baseball Looper Trolley, a downtown circulator shuttle, is also running a game-day route for 2026. Check the current route and hours before you build a plan around it. PSTA’s regular buses cover the rest of the Central Avenue corridor.

The Cross-Bay Ferry between Tampa and St. Pete is not running, so leave it out of the plan.

Getting here from the airport

Tampa International Airport (TPA) lists St. Petersburg as 20 miles away on its distance chart, and there is no simple bus or train connection between the airport and Tropicana Field. A rental car is the easiest way to get to the game, and you can buy a Rays parking pass ahead of time.

Rideshare and taxi. At TPA, Uber, Lyft, and Wridz drivers pick up at the Red Express Curbside, the Blue Express Curbside, or the remote curbside at the SkyCenter One office building. Yellow Cab taxis wait at the curb outside the Baggage Claim level, at Ground Transportation Areas Red 1 and Blue 2.

St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) has its rideshare pickup in front of the terminal at Arrivals, and its taxis wait in the Ground Transportation lot outside Baggage Claim.

Heading back after a night game. If you did not drive, request your rideshare back to the airport from the Rays’ pickup spot in Lot 8 or on Trop Drive on 16th Street.

PSTA’s 300X express bus stops at the airport, but it runs between Largo and downtown Tampa on weekdays only and does not stop in downtown St. Pete, so it will not get you to or from the Trop.

Rent the car if you can, and if you would rather not, take a rideshare to the Trop from TPA or PIE.

Luggage

The Rays’ A-Z guide says oversized bags are not permitted at Tropicana Field, and it does not list any luggage storage or bag check at the ballpark.

You can carry in one clear, single-compartment bag up to 12 by 12 by 6 inches, one small fanny pack or clutch up to 5 by 7 inches, or one of each. Backpacks are not allowed, but diaper bags with a young child and medical device bags are exceptions to the rule.

TPA’s and PIE’s ground transportation pages list no luggage storage, so get the bag to your St. Pete hotel before the game, or keep it locked in the trunk if you drove.
