Shaded seats at Petco Park: what to expect
Which side is shaded at a day game?
Petco Park has no roof, so at a 1:10 day game most of the lower level starts in the sun. The Toyota Terrace (200 level) begins about half in sun, the upper deck (300 level) is mostly shaded from first pitch on, and the outfield 200s, sections 226 through 235, tend to keep most of their sun all afternoon. The sun opens high behind home plate, leaning toward the third-base side, and moves around until it sits square off the third-base side. As it does, the even-numbered sections on the third-base side drop into shade, and by about 4 PM most of them are shaded. The odd-numbered sections on the first-base side keep a good share of their sun. In the infield sections of the lower level, the rows behind about row 25 sit under the deck above.
Where does the sun set at a night game?
Night games begin with the sun low and square off the third-base side, so the first-base side looks toward it. Even so, most of the lower level is already out of the direct sun at first pitch, and the sun is off the seats within about an hour, or a little longer at a June 6:40 start. A September 7:10 game starts after sunset.
