Going to a game?

May and June are the easiest months for a Nationals trip. July and August run hot and humid, and a night game handles most of that. September stays mild. April is mid-Atlantic spring, pleasant one night and raw the next. The bigger wrinkle is the city itself. Cherry-blossom season, July 4th, and convention traffic set Washington hotel prices on their own schedule, with no regard for who the Nationals are playing.
The weather
April is variable spring. Plenty of early-season games play out warm and pleasant, then a front moves through and a night game finishes cold. Pack a layer and check the forecast the morning of the game.
May and June are the best months here, with warm afternoons, comfortable evenings, and daylight deep into a 6:45 start. If your dates are flexible, aim here.
July and August run hot, and there is no talking around it. Washington summer means highs near 90 with humidity above 70 percent, and August is the wettest month of the year. Rather than skip a summer trip, pick the night game, when the sun is off the seats by the middle innings and the worst of the afternoon has already passed. The day games are the ones that test you.
September comes back down to mild. Mild weather does not bring small crowds, though, because September draws well here and everywhere else in baseball.
Crowds and ticket patterns
Weeknights are the soft part of the schedule, and Tuesdays have historically been the quietest dates of all. A Tuesday game against a non-rival is the easiest ticket of the summer. Marquee visitors move everything the other way. When a Dodgers-caliber draw comes to town, the weekend games sell first and the whole series prices up.
Philadelphia and New York both sit a straight shot up I-95, and Phillies and Mets series bring heavy traveling-fan turnout. Those weekends run louder and fuller than the standings would predict. The rest of the NL East schedule matters for a different reason. A routine June series against a division opponent is a normal ticket. The same matchup in a September race is a different animal.
As for the team, the 2019 World Series title was followed by a teardown and some long seasons, and a new front office and manager took over after the 2025 season. Good seats tend to be gettable on most nights. Don’t assume a middling record equals bargain tickets on a Saturday, though. Demand doesn’t track the standings that neatly.
DC events that raise hotel rates
Washington’s calendar can matter more than the Nationals’ calendar. Cherry-blossom season packs the city from late March into early April and spikes hotel rates at exactly the moment early-season tickets look cheap. July 4th puts the fireworks on the National Mall and fills downtown for the whole holiday stretch. And DC is a convention town year-round, so a random midweek series can carry weekend-level hotel pricing because a big convention landed on the same days. Book the room before the tickets.
Day game or night game
Take the night game. This is the rare baseball road trip where the daytime attractions are world-class and free. The Smithsonian museums charge no admission, and Nationals Park sits about a mile south of the US Capitol, close enough that the museum day and the game day are the same day. A night start means a full day on the Mall and the monuments, then first pitch as the heat breaks. A day game puts you in a seat for those hours instead, and in July that seat is in the sun.
You do not need to plan around promotions, either. The Racing Presidents go in the middle of the fourth inning at every home game, so the park’s signature in-game moment is there whichever date you pick.
Adding a Baltimore game
A DC baseball weekend can bolt on a second park without a rental car. The MARC train runs between Washington Union Station and Baltimore, with the Camden Line covering weekdays and the Penn Line carrying weekend service, and when the two teams’ home schedules line up you can catch a game at Camden Yards on the same trip. Check both home schedules before you book the hotel.
One planning note: a published schedule is not a promise. Baseball has had work stoppages before, and one can wipe out games that are already on the calendar, so keep travel built around a single date refundable where you can.
